It’s nice to take a break from the “fast paced” urban fantasies I’ve been delving into and get back to a more traditional type fantasy that I sincerely enjoy. He Walks With Dragons chronicles the adventures of a dragon (Draco) and his dragon rider (Draig), and yes, it does have tones of Tolkien (or Tolkien-esque influence), but that’s what makes it fun, right? 🙂
I’m not overly familiar with dragon fantasies, but I will say that He Walks With Dragons made me take notice. I loved how the author did not gloss over descriptions, nor did he fumble with these majestic magical animals.
I will say, that the beginning is a little hard to follow (hence the 4 rating), BUT, overall, the story is very rich and deep. You can tell Mr. Thornton did a lot of intricate world-building and added layers of history to bring this breathtaking world to life.

Being compared to the likes of Tolkien is a great honor!
